My experience is that fire companies and departments in PA and NY had more money to spend on vehicles, equipment, and extras (lights, bells, sirens, gold leaf, etc), and more money to spend on maintenance and upkeep. Granted, the road salt was a killer in those areas as well, but trucks got washed after almost every call, summer and winter. My experience was that the traditions of the fire service were deeper there than in other areas of the country, and that there were more older members around who wanted to keep and maintain the older vehicles of the department. It was not unusual to find departments with 30,40, 50+ year old vehicles immaculately maintained for parades and other functions. Again, just my experience.
