I call "bull" on the "no native cougars". Maybe they called them "pumas" or "lions", but they were there. If there were deer, there were cougars. I suspect "environmental conservation" just knows that if they restore the native population of cougars and wolves, their "wilderness preserve" won't be nearly so popular. From time to time, albeit rarely, a cougar will eat someone. That's not the kind of thing that people who learned about nature from watching "Bambi" want to contemplate. Plus, the hunters will turn against it because there won't be nearly as many deer.
