The rate of growth they get out of southern yellow pines is astonishing to me. I've never been to their tree plantations, but from what I've read they plant them 10' apart in rows on flat ground and they have machines that harvest them like they were cutting a corn field. It's way different from around here, where lots of species are mixed together, trees are almost never planted, and the ground is too steep even for skidders. They still have actual human loggers going up and down the hillsides falling the trees and actual human choker setters hook the logs up to jammers, which are basically construction cranes with extra cable on a bigger spool. It's no wonder they can't compete with southern pine plantations in the national markets.
