When I first started buying lumber, probably around 1961, grade 1 was essentially "clear". And It cost about $65.00/1000 board feet. They sold "farmer's grade" for around $30.00/MBF.
Look where it's at now. Grading has gone downhill, and prices have gone uphill. "Clear" is almost impossible to find, in any species, in a normal lumber yard. Oh, and a normal lumber yard is getting pretty hard to find, too. Now it's Home Depot, Lowe's, Pro Build, etc., etc......all just big box stores with a different name.
