A couple of years ago a very heavily loaded truck with heavy equipment on a flatbed went under the bridge. The load was very heavy and VERY strong and the bridge was damaged and shifted by the impact, preventing trains from crossing. When the bridge was repaired, they installed a "crash bar" ahead of the bridge to prevent the bridge from being hit again. In the attached photo you can see a truck which has been "halted" by the crash bar. I suppose that the crash bar will "skim" off the top of a vehicle that has enough momentum to go under it and will then not hit the bridge.
