When you are doing it right, it will sound like bacon frying.
If you already know how to gas and arc weld, you really don't really need to know anything else. If you are a raw beginner, have someone show you. A semester class at a junior college will set you up for life in all the basic types of welding.
Just make sure you use a welding helmet, gloves and otherwise protect yourself. As suggested, Youtube is a good place to start.
