There are lots of stories passed around about service time, but in my opinion, most are not based in actual fact. Those that really were out there, didn't and don't talk about it much. There a lots of posts on the internet regarding 'posers' who dress up in uniforms and wear medals they are not entitled to wear, along with the stories to support them. Australia has a movement to out these individuals.
As a kid, one of the neighbours used to take us all to the lake, camping and taught us how to make and fix stuff. Drink was his enemy and once in awhile he went off on a bender. We learned later that he was a member of the SSF in WW2 and those memories haunted him. He never talked about his experiences, even once.
