I used to replace everything but either Timken prices have gone way up or my income has gone way down, because they seem much more expensive these days. Nowadays I just look over bearings closely, feel them, hold them up to the light, and if they look okay, I keep them, or just replace the cone. Wheel bearings on old vehicles are generally over-sized for the load, and run slowly, so they don't wear unless dirt or water has gotten in. That also means they can get pretty bad before they'll flat-out disintegrate in the field. I figure the noise of a rumbling bearing will be enough warning.

On the other hand, any rust pits at all in any part means it needs to be replaced. As I've learned from experience, a slightly rusty bearing will sound fine at first when lubed up, but the rust pits will soon get pounded out bigger and bigger until you start getting shattered rollers and a whole lot of noise. On rigs that have sat for a long time, oil and even grease drain off the bearing surfaces and condensation makes them rust. It doesn't take much rust to provide a place for rapid wear to begin once you start running it.
