That tire must have been WAY out. The tire man/technician (an older guy with a lot of experience) told me if a tire was 1/4" or more out of round he would not attempt to do it for the reason you gave. He said to junk those tires or live with them.
Under 1/4", I can tell you it makes a big difference in a positive way, for one thing they can actually balance the tire/wheel.
From what I understand a tire that is significantly out of round is very difficult if not impossible to balance.
