Mechanical fuel pumps are in my mind the best. Unfortunately I think there may only be one other in the forum that would agree with me.

If the whole line is dry, it will take a while to pump up to the truck so you might want to take the filter off and add a section of hose to the line after the pump and have the end in a container to catch the fuel "if it does start pumping". When this is all set up- do the same gas adding method to the carb and spin the engine over a few times so the starter doesn't have to work so hard. It shouldn't take to many attempts to get it up the tank and into the line. Just keep in mind that if the section of hose is below the truck "i/e on the floor" the fuel might start to siphon out and will fill the container even if the truck isn't running. Unlikely, but had to add that as a disclaimer. Be safe.

The older pumps had finger primers on the pumps so you could prime them without cranking the engine over a gazzilion times.
