The reality is that wildfires today are in general more dangerous than past years due to extended drought and erratic weather conditions, plus higher fuel loading in many areas.

Putting hand crews in front of these fires is extremely dangerous, as we have seen over and over (Mann Gulch, 1949, Montana; Storm King, 1994, Colorado; and now the Yarnell Hill Incident).

Incident commanders are likely going to have to reconsider using hotshots and other hand crews for initial attack on such fires - current conditions make it too dangerous to put people in such dangerous situations.
