You could even use a couple of AA batteries in series.
1.5 volts is say 3/4 full, 3 volts is 1/2 full and so on.
Series meaning that the batteries are itouching each other end to end with + touching up against the - of the next battery. Each battery is 1.5 volts, so you can test your gauge with 1.5; 3; 4.5 and 6 volts.
