The real difference between gas and diesel comes when you load them up. I. Get 12 mpg in mixed mountain and flat with my camper and I am about 13k. When I add the truck and trailer to that I am 22k and get 10 to 21 mpg. No gas truck can come close to that not haul that sort of weight as easy.
