It looks like the study only went out to 5 years/75,000 miles. So, that would not be long enough to expereince any serious mechanical failures or replacement of the diesel particulate filter.

The study included several models of cars and trucks. Ram diesels actually did not contirbute to the headline that said Diesel's were cheaper.

The Ram gas vs diesel comparison was pretty close to being even. After 3 years, the diesel saved a total of $67. After 5 years, the diesel cost $578 more than the gas truck.

My take away from the study is that if you really want a diesel truck, you could justify the the expensive diesel option, beucase after depreciation, fuel, and other costs, it becomes a wash.

My '92 Cummins has 377,000 miles on it. I have no doubt that diesel was the right choice for my truck becuase I burn biodiesel. Over the last 10 years, I have used approximatley 10,000 gallons of American-made fuel. Often times, that saved me money, but even wen it didn't, I liked where my money was going.
