A ute is like a pickup, except the bed is part of the cab structure - similar to your el-camino and generally based on the same model car. Ford are credited with the first ute in '34. You usually have a parcel shelf behind the seat that creates a covered section at the front of the bed. Back in the day it was used for the shopping, dog and/or any extra children.
