I wouldn't risk the three wire gauge if it is still good. They are worth some money now since so many people burned them up with 12 volts.
You need to check the gauge with an ohm meter to make sure it is good. If not, there's no need worrying about how to use a 6 volt gauge with 12 volts.
There were some posts awhile back, by Clint Dixon, I believe, on universal 12 volt senders. 12 volt gauges are easier to find.
