WDX fuel gauge wiring

Can anyone help with the wiring of a fuel gauge for a 1946 WDX?
I believe that the middle terminal is the hot terminal and the two outside terminals go to the fuel tank. Am I correct?
Also, I assume that there is a ground from the tank as well as a variable ground. Is this correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
