Actually, I don't believe trying to avoid a collision with a deer is a bad thing. I don't remember the numbers now, but a surprising number of people are killed each year hitting deer.
The problem is, people are often surprised and over-react causing them to loose control. The idea is to slow as much as possible and take appropriate action to avoid hitting the deer without losing control of the vehicle or leaving the roadway.
Even a simple correction might keep you from hitting the deer directly. I believe the major cause of fatalities is caused by the deer coming through the windshield.
