Cleaning Rust from a Gas Tank

I'm getting ready to reinstall the gas tank for the 6x6 Power Wagon. I got the sending unit out, and noticed some rust inside the tank. Not a lot, but enough to need cleaning. I'm thinking about cleaning the rust with muriatic acid (yes I know, be careful), and wondered if you all had some feedback pro or con regarding that. Also considering 1" drywall screws and strapping it in a cement mixer for a couple hours. I also seem to recall someone putting something in their tank that scrubbed and coated the inside so it didn't rust again. Not a chemical, rather something like lead fishing weights, or some zinc item....
