I've seen a few where the receiver adapter is bolted to the outboard side of the crossmember & I don't like that method. All the weight you're towing is being placed on those 4 bolts however if you bolt the adapter from the forward side of the crossmember, not only can you not see it but you'd have to pull the whole crossmember out of the frame in order to have it fail.
Can't see it ever happening...not even with that mighty Cummins 3.9 of yours :)
