Probably not the problem, but you might as well check it before you start taking it apart. The symptoms indicate the pinion is disengaging from the ring gear.
You can probably get a whole axle from pick-a-part for somewhere around $100. These trucks are getting harder to find in the junk yards, but you only need one.
