I replaced the same crossmember with a one from a scrap frame. I blame the rust out on the weep hole in the bottom getting plugged with mud.

I also welded on some gussets top and bottom. I planned the gussets to bridge the area from where the inner layer of frame ends to beyond the spring mount. The seems to be the 'stress riser' where they fatigue because all the flex happens there.

I did NOT weld across the frame flanges. That could cause another stress riser. Only welded to frame longitudinally. Similar gussts on bottom. Pics to follow.
