I changed out the water distribution tube in my FFPW. It was in sad shape and had to be convinced to come out of the block. Bought the tool from VPW to remove it with a slide hammer. Replaced it with a nice new one.

Anyway, I also pulled all the core plugs and the bottom ones were packed with dirt. Took a lot of flushing to get it all (most) out. I'm certain it would have had cooling issues had I not done that. I removed at least a quart of dirt/sludge from the block.

As you did, I replaced the water pump, re-cored the radiator, and added all new coolant and hoses. Runs like a champ, no cooling issues and I'm in Phoenix.
