True the .30 carbine round cant compare to a rifle cartridge, but it has alot more power than a .357 magnum.. good for short distances, but not the best tool for open country rifle combat. Also an M1 Carbine is shorter (slightly) than a AR-15 shorty, so dont pass on one if you can get a deal.
My Dad was Army Infantry in Korea. He told me he had a Garand (30.06) and shot a Korean in the thigh about 100 yds away, by the time he walked over to him the Korean was dead.
