I would guess that the swap would work OK from my own experience, especially if you change out the instrument panel at the same time. My daughter and I installed a 1986 Dodge 2X4, gas engine truck cab on a 1991 Dodge 4X4, Cummins turbo diesel frame and running gear. The worst part of the swap was re-installing the wiring harness inside of the dash (where my daughter's small hands made the difference), but it all went together properly. We did install the 1991 instruments in the dash. I was amazed that it all plugged together so well, especially considering the differences in the basic trucks.
