Not only does a turbocharged Perkins or Cummins or Isuzu or other 3.9L 4cyl diesel have enough power to top out (at 25-2800 rpm) with 4.89 gears, but they will top out with oversized tires AND an overdrive 5th gear. My 3.7L turbocharged Hercules hits 76 mph at 2800 rpm in my M37 with 0.799 5th gear, 4.89s, and 36.9" Michelin 9.00R16 XZLs.
I'm putting a turbocharged Perkins 4.236 into a WC53 with 4.89s, with a NP540 behind it (0.821:1 5th gear) and running on 36.5" 37X12.5R16.5s. I fully anticipate it will hit 2800 easily at about 73 mph. Hopefully I'll be able to find some slightly taller tires when the ones I have wear out.
Does this answer your question?
Charlie
