My father traded in a '52 Plymouth for a new '55 Chevy with the V8. The Plymouth was totally reliable and would crank and start immediately, even at below zero. The Chevy had numerous problems, but the V8 was much quicker than the flathead powered Plymouth.

In the first year the 262 V8 cracked pistons and blew out the PowerGlide transmission. Repaired under warranty the V8 burned oil and leaked tranmission fluid. Traded the '55 in for a '59 Chevy with a 235 six, the '59 Chevy was worse. Hey, the '55 became a "classic" ! He should have parked the Chevy behind the barn.
