Hi all, I'm having some trouble with the oil seal on the output yoke on a 205 divorced transfer case on my 74 W200. I had a reputable (large) shop replace the seal since it was leaking a year ago. After this, it started leaking worse than before. So, no problem, must be the yoke wore, so this Feb. I brought it back to the same shop, they replaced the seal again and put a speedy sleeve on the yoke. Aha, problem solved, except they don't warranty seals so now I'm down the cost for two. But the case continues to leak albeit not enough to worry about but annoying all the same. Now tonight, I'm underneath greasing the u-joints and wiping the oil off the case. Then I notice that the seal has worked its way out of its seat and is being held from completely falling out by the lip on the speedy sleeve. So the seal is doing its job but the oil is coming out because the seal is barely in the groove. So I get angry, phone the shop, and politely explain the problem. The response I get is the speedy sleeve was only a quickfix and they will probably have to replace the yoke and seal. I say BS, the problem is the seal was never installed properly, and I'm not paying for another seal, or yoke, but I need the truck fixed because I will be doing a lot of hauling this weekend.
Anyways, to end this, will a seal work its way out like they suggest or am I right in insisting that it was not installed properly the first time. I'm going to the shop tomorrow and I don't want to lose my temper. Or maybe should I give up on this shop. After my original visit to replace driveshafts, ujoints, seal, etc. one of the locking hubs they worked on fell off on the way home. They did replace both, with no hassles however. I've gone back because they worked on it originally and they are known as the experts in this area (Red Deer, Alberta). Do I have a valid point? The last seal/sleeve cost $65 and the labour was $90. I don't think I have the tools to do it myself.
