I was Operations Officer of one of those "If I tell you, etc." units. I was also the Maintenance Officer. The rest of our operational elements were in M-151A2's or M-880's. Our field operations center was a M-109 with the multi-fuel engine. I drove it since I had the choice. (There was never any truth to the rumor that it was furnished with a water bed. I pulled the water trailer as a favor to the mess sergeant.)

Due to the special nature of our duties we were authorized to break convoy procedure - run alone and pass other vehicles in convoys. This meant driving at the M-109's maximum road speed, 56 mph.

My fuel consumption for a two week exercise which involved driving 100 miles each way fast as possible and running the engine 30 minutes every 12 hours to charge the batteries figured out to give me 8 mpg.

This was the same mileage as my Class A Winnebago motorhome with the 413 III engine, 727 trans, and after I installed an Offenhauser Dual-Port 360 degree intake manifold and Carter 850 cfm competition series ThermoQuad carburetor to double the mileage from the 4mpg of the original setup.

Jump in that 6x6 motorhome and have a nice trip. Diesel is running at least 30 cents less than gasoline. If you don't have a "steel pot" you can buy a plastic bucket for your field baths.
