Lets see, it's been a long time, I'll see if I can remember how this works. The Np203 being a "part time" transfer case provides driving power to both the front and rear axles while in HI, with a differential action, allowing front and rear wheels to turn at different speeds for normal highway driving on hard surfaces. In HI, any one wheel on either axle can loose traction and spin freely causing loss of forward motion (assuming you have "open diferentials). HI LOC mechanically locks this internal differential action within the transfer case providing the equivalent action of a "Full Time" transfer case. Both axles now turn the same speed and one wheel on each axle would have to loose traction for forward motion to theoretically cease. LO LOC operates same as HI LOC but provides a lower ratio. "Full time" Np transfer cases would include: 200, 201, and 205. I believe this was the descr1ption I recall from back in the 1970's, but the terms "Full Time" and "Part Time" seem to be switched as far as current transfer cases are concerned.
