On an all original '58 Willy's wagon that I used to have, the oil bath filter always leaked down all over the carb. I made a real project out of converting the original oil bath into a housing for a paper element, making sure that the top and bottom were adequately sealed. I took the unit to a common auto parts store and took filters out of the boxes for test fits until I found the one that fit best, then wrote down all the cross-references for that filter number. It looked great with the hood open. I got a second original oil bath filter from a junkyard that I gave to the buyer so that he would have "original" componants, but I bet he's still using the paper filter.
