oil bath "bubbles" air through the oil to remove foriegn particals, thus you absolutely need the oil..

i have been told by old timers that the oil bath cleans better than "paper " filters.. can't prove it, but suspect it may be true.

oil bath requires only periodic cleaning and fresh oil, while paper requires replacement. oil bath will not "plug up" unless severely neglected because the solids sink to the bottom of the bowl. oil bath may be more restrictive than "high flow" paper filters, but i suspect a flat head six would not know the difference.. oil bath filters from my experience can be difficult to find...
