I have a 66 chevy 4x4 with a 292 straight six. I took out the 4 speed and put in a NV4500. I get worse mileage in 5th than I do in 4th on the interstate. I think if you were to put in 4.11 or 3.55 the truck wouldnt pull itself at all. Just a thought.
