You are not out of line.
People are ignorant and do what they want with out caring for others or their property. I have had many people ignore the signs on my truck I have had people reach in and open the glove box and etc. I have had them climb up on my trailer then onto the truck (caught that guy red handed and he was not happy with the attention as he said that he was doing nothing wrong). Kids have been lifted up on the running boards right in front of signs.
But on the flip side most people are just fine around the truck at shows I have had many people ask for permission to show their kids and I will usually let them showing them the rubber pads to step on. I had other people protect my truck from some idiot people when my back was turned or I had stepped away.
The best part about most shows I attend are the people that I meet and get to talk to. I often learn quite a bit from these people.
