Old farriers rasps are probably the biggest "files" around, and they seem pretty common and unwanted. I dug up two on my place while bulldozing. Pretty soon he'll use broken leaf springs, and then he'll have to learn black smithing and how to shape, harden, and temper the steel. You've got a good kid. I wish him well with it all.
