$399 for 300 rounds in the latest cheaper-than-dirt catalog. It wasn't that long ago that only .50 BMG was over $1/round. Now it's $5/round and even before the latest craziness, regular old green box .30-06 was over $1/round.

I just don't understand all the fanaticism about the AR15. I've got one somewhere. Maybe even fired it once. I just don't care for black plastic and black aluminum. Guns should be made of walnut and blued steel. An AK47 comes closer to that. Plus, at least at the Seattle-area gun shows the most dubious-looking characters were the ones getting excited about AR15s -- city boys in their 20s who looked like they'd never spent a night in the woods.

I can't quite figure out what's up with the AR15 prices, though. A couple months ago I went to the CdA gun show, a reasonable sized show (2 buildings at the fairgrounds) and there wasn't a AR15 in the place with a price tag below $2000, new or used, beater or accessorized. Then maybe 2 weeks ago I went to our tiny little local show at the Kellogg VFW hall, maybe 10 tables of guns total, by the time you eliminate all the charity raffles, survivalist supplies, and silver coin people, and there was a dealer out of Hayden selling new AR15s for $800. I almost bought one just to flip it for double the price, but I left my money in the car with my dog with strict instructions to her to not let me have it.
