I am nearing the completion of a full refurb on my 68 Case 580CK loader/backhoe.
The front spindles had been ignored for many years before I bought it 25 plus years ago, and have always slopped around. I bought a new set of front spindles, and all new bearings, and they now work as new. The right side spindle steering arm has a tapered splined hole, and the top of the spindle has the matching tapered spline. However, the splines in the steering arm are worn pretty badly toward the bottom, they seem pretty good at the top. When I tighten everything down, I can still get about 1/4" of rotation out of the spindle, without the steering arm moving.
Not really excited about buying a new steering arm, but not sure how to proceed. My thought process is to try some shim stock around the spindle, and then to get it adjusted for the correct lash and drill through the side of the steering arm, through the spindle and out the other side of the steering arm. Then install a grade 8 bolt and have that lock them together. The spindle is about an inch and a half diameter where I would be drilling. I figure a 5/16" bolt.
Anyone have any other thoughts or comments?
Thanks,
Tim
