you should have positive 12 volts fed to the coil terminal marked 'BAT' The other terminal goes to the breaker points in the distributor. With the ignition 'on' you should have a reduced voltage at the 'BAT' term. of around 9=10 volts, but when starting (cranking) the engine, the coil should have a solid 12 volts. (the ignition switch bypasses the ballast resistor during starting to provide max coil voltage) If your coil is getting warm, the condenser inside the distributor is shorted or the points are stuck closed. Thus you will have no spark. Good luck, it should be something simple.
