Adding to what David and John mentioned, I was having trouble successfully polarizing my 6 volt system when I was getting to drive the '52 for the first time after restoration.
The system did not seem be charging based on what the ammeter showed me.
By chance, I discovered that the problem was that the battery, although strong enough to crank the engine, needed to be recharged. Once I did that for a few hours and it was "up", the polarizing process worked and the charging system then worked properly; I could see how the ammeter worked when the engine revved, especially when there was an eletrical load.
Not sure of the electrical physics involved, but that is what appeared to have happened.
