And the way it goes to full makes me think there may be too much ground in the field wires. Some alts have an brush holder that grounds that brush, other holder has wire goes to reg. Some use two wires, and get grounded through reg.
I think the mechanical reg can be upgraded to the electronic, with correct brush holder and wiring. 'E' regs had either two or three wires, the olde mech ones were two, one to hot, other to alt. Alts were the same except for that grounded brush holder.
