The pitman arm does indeed have a taper on it's splined area. The box and the arm are both tapered to allow them to fit tight to the splines. The splines on the arm are not a common size ( 36 splines I think ) and no newer steering box will fit them. I think Fords were the biggest splined PS boxes but the spline count is wrong. Please check but I went thru this last year and got a custom pitman made to fit the chevy PS box and to attach to the ballstud for the drag link. Terry
