doubble diff gasket

Changing the rear diff on my 48 B1pw, and need advise. the diff I removed was the early 8 3/4 diff, and had doubble housing gaskets when removed. I am installing a proper 9 5/8 diff in it now. Is there any reason for 2 gaskets? thought I remember on some early housings that 2 were nessessary with the larger diff. This may not be the original rear axle to the truck being it had the smaller diff, but may have only had the diff changed for all know. Any help would be greatly apreciated. John
