Pro restorer Charles Talbert, over on Gordon's forum, said he has always used straight 50 weight engine oil in the trannys.
It is the "same weight" as 90w gear oil, but does not have the additives that can attach the synchro's etc.
Based on this recommendation, I used it and have been very pleased over the last 2 1/2 years of driving the PW, even in winter.
Nowadays, winters have been milder and it rarely gets in the teens. But even down around 20 it has not been an issue shifting.
I use 90-140 in the TC because is is more leaky even with speedy sleeves and new seals.
I have avoided synthetics because of reports like Jerry's and the tendency for leaking.
