If you don't have turn signals or don't want to use the, roll down your window and stick your left arm straight out to signal for a left turn, or bend your elbow and point it up for a right turn. We had to demonstrate that we could do it. I don't think I've ever seen anyone give a hand signal (at least not that kind) though. Of course lots of people just drive stream-of-consciousness, changing lanes, speeding up, slowing down, or turning as the spirit moves them, without feeling any need to communicate their intentions (if they indeed had them prior to turning the wheel) to drivers behind them. I've used the hand signals on rare occasions driving some old rig without working signals a short distance around town if there's someone behind me. I also have a box I made that makes it easy to jerry-rig a legal minimum set of lights on a rig that doesn't have a working electrical system by running temporary wires from the box to the battery, headlights, and a set of trailer lights mounted to strips of metal I can clamp to something convenient.
