You should have one wire coming back that stays on anytime the headlights are on. That is the tail light wire. Usually, one wire powers both sides, assuming you have two tail lights.

On the factory system and many after-market systems, one tail light has a clear lens in the bottom of the housing to illuminate the license plate when the tail light is on.

If you have a separate license plate light, you power it off the lead to the tail lights. If all leads coming back from the tail light switch blink, then some thing is not hooked up right.

Usually, you will have one combination brake light/turn signal wire going to each rear light and one tail light wire which goes to one tail light (probably the left)and then continues on to the other.
