20 years ago, a pilot buddy of mine gave me a can of Wing Walk, which is used on airplanes as a high-traction surface for pilots and mechanics to walk on when climbing onto a plane. It contains a gritty substance and is painted on. I simply masked off the areas of the running boards and painted the stuff on with a brush. I don't even recall scuffing the existing brand-new paint before applying the Wing Walk, but it wouldn't hurt to do that.

It still looks great to this day and provides great traction, even in wet weather. Of course, the majority of the last 20 years have seen this truck in storage or down for major repairs, but it has seen enough use for me to know this stuff is quite durable. Assuming I can still get it, it seems that it would be really easy to touch it up if it ever needs it.
