Hi Nick,
The pitted and grooved yoke is the cause of the vast majority of leaks. The NOS leather seals are hit or miss, but will sometimes leak when new. I think they were allowed to seep but not run out and spray the truck! Did you check and make sure the vent is working properly?
The TM is written for soldiers in a motor pool to do the work, so are very clear.
