I haven't seen an engine where you could get a piston out (or more importantly in) from the bottom, but maybe it's possible. I don't know how you could set up a ring compressor to do it that way, and if course you couldn't check the ring gap.

Personally, I'm cheap so I would try just replacing the bad piston (and since you have to take out the con rod anyway check it carefully to see if it got bent) and not doing any machine work and running it like that.

Too often these days we think that if anything goes wrong inside an engine it needs a total rebuild, but in the old days they would often just replace whatever broke and put it back in service. I've even heard of knurling pistons and shimming rod bearings to get some more life out of a worn-out motor at little cost. Of course back then "shop rate" was a lot less than it is today.
