That happened to our 1999 model Grand Cherokee last year. We had about 200,000 miles on the engine. We sold it to a auto salvage company and a couple of days later, one of the employees had bought it, fixed it, and was driving it.

We were told by the company that it is a common problem with the straight 6 in these vehicles with that mileage. We probably should have fixed it and kept it, but we found a 2004 with a 4.7 V8 that we liked better.

With that kind of mileage, if it were me and I wanted to keep the vehicle, I would drop a new piston in and drive it. Of course, that is not what the manual says to do.......
