I'm tinkering with small parts in the house while the weather is cold. I watched some videos on polishing stainless steel on line. I'm using a buffer with new cloth wheels and compounds. I started with the worst ring I have. It buffed up real well. Then on to the next one. This one had a lot of marks on it so I started out using 320 paper and went up through 600 1000 then 1500. This was done in the evening while watching tv. Now in the daylight I can see I've gone through the shine and exposed a base metal of a brass color. I didn't expect this as I thought they were stainless steel. I'll stick with just buffing in the future and live with the scratches.
So my question is are these rings usually S.S.? And what about the tarnish on the reflectors can they be cleaned? Jim
